Bitcoin Pizza Day marks the day when the first known purchase of a physical good occurred using the first cryptocurrency, bitcoin (BTC).
In May 2010, Jeremy Sturdivant, then a 19-year-old student, saw a weird request on a crypto online forum posted by Laszlo Hanyecz.
The request was for two pizzas to be delivered to him, and in exchange, he’d give 10,000 bitcoins.
Jeremy sent Laszlo two large pizzas from Papa John’s.
The 10,000 BTC was worth roughly USD $40 at the time.
Since this was considered the first physical item ever bought with bitcoin, the event became known as Bitcoin Pizza Day and is held every year on May 22 to celebrate.
At $20,000 per BTC, the 10,000 BTC is worth USD $200 million.
Anyone who says that money cannot buy happiness has clearly never spent their money on pizza. – Andrew W.K.
Laszlo’s request is mind-boggling! Why didn’t he also ask for extra garlic dipping sauce?!
