A cryptocurrency (or “crypto”) is a digital asset that is created without the need for a central authority such as a central bank.
Cryptocurrencies are built with technology known as a blockchain, which relies on a P2P network of computers to maintain a record of transactions and keep track of ownership.
Depending on how they are used, cryptocurrencies are also known as "coins" or "tokens".
